Module 12 Video Blog

Mod #12 Video Blog

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

Video #1: Andy Warhol: Images of an Image

I selected this video because the artist was of interest to me.  Andy Warhol makes art that is different and unique yet is repetitious.  I wanted to see some more of his work and learn more about him as an artist.

Video #2: The Art of Henry Moore

I selected this video for the exact opposite reason I selected the first video.  I have never heard anything about Henry Moore.  I read the summary and it sounded like this artist had some interesting works of art.  I then decided to watch this video to see what he was all about.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Video #1: Andy Warhol: Images of an Image

This video concentrates on the back ground of Andy Warhol and the art he created.  It also describes how his art fit in to the culture at the time it was created.  He centered his art on modern current day events and objects.  He made several pieces featuring Marilyn Monroe and also Elizabeth Taylor.  He also made art based on consumer products.  The Campbell soup and Coca-Cola were examples of these.   Andy Warhol used silk screen to make many of his images.  He did this because it was easier than making them by hand and anyone of his assistants could reproduce the image as well as he could.  Andy Warhol also worked in music, film, and created his own magazine.  He actually shot over 100 small films and was a journalist.  The film also points out how Andy Warhol was self centered and self absorbed.

Video #2: The Art of Henry Moore

This video centers on the background of Henry Moore and the art he created.  It discusses the drawings and sculptures he created.  He started life as the son of a coal miner with seven siblings.  He began drawing and carving when he was a child and then at the age of 18 he went into the army.  This lead to Henry going to the Leed School of Art and then on to the Royal School of Art.  He stated that he aligned himself with the surrealist movement.  This was because he identified with their ideas of freedom of art.  In 1939 he began making what he called reclining art.  This was when he began working in abstract art.  The reclining figures were sculptures of people that were largely abstract.  More than half of Henry Moore’s sculptures were of this type and are the defining element of his artistic style.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

Video #1: Andy Warhol: Images of an Image

Andy Warhol is discussed in chapter 22 of the text.  The text and the video both give examples of his work.  The video however gives more examples and goes further into details of his personal life and even calls him a narcissist.  The text takes more of a informational approach while the video wants the viewer to understand the thought process that the artist goes through when he creates his art.

Video #2: The Art of Henry Moore

The video and the text both attempt to make the reader/viewer understand the artists back grounds.  I find over and over the videos give more information on the history and cultural influences of the artists.  This holds true for this video as well.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

Video #1: Andy Warhol: Images of an Image

This video captured the art and the person.  It made me understand who Andy Warhol is as a person.  I felt the video did a good job of centering on the components that make up his work.  It also does a sufficient job of presenting information on the art so the viewer can see how and why it was created.  The video compliments the text by adding more detailed information on Andy Warhol and lists the specifics on the screen printing process.

Video #2: The Art of Henry Moore

This video heavily focused on the reclining art sculptures done by Henry Moore.  Significantly less time was spent on the other art that he did.  I felt this video contained a great deal of information on the artist and his art.  In fact the video was narrated in the artists own words.  The back ground and history of the artist was described fully.  This video complimented the text by giving many more examples of Henry Moore’s work combined with a good picture of the influences on his life.
