Mod 10 Video Blog

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

Video#1: African Art

I choose this video because of its links between art and African culture.  I wanted to learn a bit more about the art of the region and how the culture used art in their daily lives.  This video seemed to address this topic and contained a good deal of information to support the concepts.

Video#2: Buddhism

I decided to view this video for two main reasons.  First, I am interested in the Buddhist religion and the different aspects of it.  I find the concepts and origins of this religion to be fascinating.  Second, I wanted to see how this religion makes and uses art as a component of their beliefs.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Video#1: African Art

The key concepts in this video are the different types of African art and the cultural meaning attached to it.  The video describes how most of the remaining artifacts are less than 200 years old because they are made from wood.  The ceremonial attachment to the African art can be seen in the masks that they made.  These masks are used in ritual and displayed at important events.  This is considered performance art.  They have also discovered ancient art painted on rocks.  They commonly depict animals of the time.  These animals are linked to the survival of these people and were probably hunted for food.  The video also discussed how African art influenced modern artists like Picasso and other Europeans.

Video#2: Buddhism

The main concepts of this video are the history, architecture, art, and cultures related to Buddhism.  Buddhism is described as a religion that is based on the individual finding enlightenment.  Enlightenment is when a person escapes from the cycle of birth, life, and death.  This cycle is believed to occur over and over until enlightenment is found through the teachings of Buddha.  The video shows statues of Buddha made of gilded stone.  This seems to be a common art medium of the Buddhist culture.  Sanchi, India has relics from the religion that date back 2000 years.  There are many works of art here.  People make pilgrimages here to practice the Buddhist religion and view the art work.  The Buddhist religion is filled with architectural art as well that can be seen in these ancient sites as well.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

Video#1: African Art

This video covered some of the same concepts as the text does in chapter 18.  The arts of Africa are covered in the second half of this chapter.  The ceremonial mask making is described in both the video and the text.  The use of masks as performance art is a key concept in both the video and the text.

Video#2: Buddhism

The text and the video discuss the architecture of the Buddhist religion.  They both discuss the stupas.  These are mound like structures containing Buddhist relics.  Each specific design of stupas can have a different meaning.  The text and the video also spend time discussing the ideas of the religion and the concepts that it is based upon.  This included the cycle of life, nature of time, and the path to break free.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

Video#1: African Art

I am finding a common theme to most of the videos for this course.  They seem dated and do not use modern video making techniques.  This video was no different.  It was dated and the orator was very mono tone.  The informational component however was significant.  The video made several concepts of African art clear and gave many examples to support the information that the speaker in the video was describing.

Video#2: Buddhism

This video gave a ton of information on the “story” of the Buddhist religion.  It then transitioned into important locations, buildings, and art work associated with it.  I think the video paralleled the text well on these subjects and then also added to the topic by giving many examples.  The examples given in the video far out numbered the examples that the text provided.
